THURROCK suffered a 2-1 defeat to Chelmsford City in their latest pre-season friendly at Ship Lane.

Fleet are preparing for their first campaign back in the Isthmian Premier League, after winning promotion via the Isthmian North play-offs last term.

Chelmsford City, who enjoyed a fine season themselves before losing in the National League South play-off final to Ebbsfleet United which denied them a place in the top tier of non-league football, started well and went ahead inside 10 minutes.

Kudos Oyenuga, who caused plenty of problems for the home defence, swung a dangerous ball into the penalty area and striker Kane Haysman was there to volley home.

But Mark Stimson's side hit back and were level with 21 minutes on the clock as Jordan Clark converted from the penalty spot.

Oyenuga was on hand to net the winning goal, as the Clarets striker headed home following a fine passing move from Rod Stringer's men in the heavy rain.

Elsewhere, Grays Athletic made it two pre-season wins on the bounce as they defeated Waltham Forest 3-1.

Kieran Bishop put Jamie Stuart's side ahead after 26 minutes.

And Jamie Slabber, who has returned to the club this summer in an attempt to help Grays to an immediate return to the Isthmian Premier League, scored twice in eight second half minutes to give the visitors a clear lead.

Although Waltham Forest netted a consolation goal in the dying moments, Grays were satisfied with another promising performance.
