THURROCK have released Abs Thompson with immediate effect following his actions after his sending off in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Great Wakering Rovers.

Thompson is believed to have punched Rovers captain Lewis Sparrow after being shown a red card following a clash with the same man and, on Tuesday, Fleet announced they had severed ties with the midfielder.

The club said “This is something we don't encourage and cannot accept by one of our players”

In a statement, manager Mark Stimson said: "I understand the clubs decision. I also have sympathy for the player having played the game myself. If somebody stood on my chest I would have possibly acted in the same way knowing it’s not the right thing to do., It’s just that mad 10 second period.

"We would like to wish Abs all the best for the future and thank him for some special moments he gave us.

“Abs himself also asked me to say sorry to the fans and club for his behaviour and wished us all the best for the rest of the season and the future.”
