Jay Leader has apologised to the Grays Athletic supporters for the manner of his departure, after he left to join Cray Wanderers.

The centre-half left Blues on Thursday, having made a name for himself as one of the Ryman Premier League’s finest defenders.

But Leader opted to make the move to Cray, who are among the title challengers in the division below Grays, and are rumoured to have offered him a coaching role.

And Leader exclusively told the Gazette the reasons behind the move were not financially motivated, and that he paid for his release from Grays himself.

“I would like to apologise to the fans for the unexpected way I left Grays Athletic, but felt I had to due to reasons the club are aware of,” he said.

“I am also aware of the speculation surrounding my departure, but can assure the fans this was not to my financial gain in anyway. I have paid my release clause out of my own pocket.”

Leader also thanked manager Mark Bentley, assistant manager Glen Little and the coaching staff, while wishing the club all the best for the rest of the season.

“I would like to thanks Benno, Glen and the coaching staff for all they have done with me and trying to push me on as a player,” he said. “I wish the team all the best for the rest of the season and hope they can push into the play-offs.

“Lastly, I would like to thank all the loyal Grays supporters I have had the pleasure of meeting during my time at the club. I hope, one day, they can help take Grays back home where they belong.”
