GRAYS Athletic owner Andy Swallow has asked supporters to "keep the faith" after an application to build 501 homes in Aveley was rejected by the government, dealing a big blow to Blues' hopes of securing a new home.

Swallow admits he was "disappointed" that plans to build on the former London Fire Brigade Sports and Social Club had been overturned, having previously been approved by Thurrock Council.

The applicant Westview Properties Ltd, which is run by Grays' former owner Mick Woodward, had promised to build a new £800,000 sports centre at Treetops School, in Grays, and new sports pitches at Belhus Park, in Aveley, as part of the agreement.

And Swallow said the club will continue to fight the government's decision, after the news broke earlier today.

Here is his statement in full.

"The club received today a 78 page document to say that our planning application for the former firemans ground in Aveley had been refused by the government. As you can imagine trying to read 78 pages and knowing the final line will say REFUSED is very hard, so we will do that over the weekend.

"We are very disappointed considering we had won two planning votes 5/4, then a month later 4/3.

"There could be an appeal but, at this time, we need to look at the paperwork, meet with lawyers and see where we stand.

'So Where does this leave Grays Athletic Football Club? Not as strong as if we had got planning permission, you're not stupid enough to believe that and I wouldn't insult you by trying to say any different.

"I've always had a couple of long-term options in mind so I will dust myself down, have a stiff drink and then come again.

"I will try my hardest to get us a secure location and one day return home to Grays.

"I still believe there are other options for us. Who knows, this application may still have legs."

Swallow is away for Grays' game at Peacehaven & Telscombe tomorrow, but asked the supporters to get behind caretaker manager Mark Bentley and the side, who returned to winning ways with a 3-1 win over Kingstonian this week.

"The managers roll will still be dealt with over the coming weeks once my meetings are over," said Swallow. "I promise I will secure a deal to protect this great football club and I'm as committed as ever.

"Keep the faith."
