Grays 1

Thamesmead 4

NON LEAGUE: GRAYS were well beaten at home by struggling Thamesmead, whose late season rally appears to have come too late to save them from the drop.

They will require an unlikely sequence of results on the last day of the Ryman Premier season but seem doomed, despite this win at Mill Field which saw the home side cruelly barracked by a section of their fans despite finishing in mid table on their return to this level.

The home side had taken the lead after 40 minutes through Joao Carlos, one of their best players on a day of poor performances.

Rob Carter put Thamesmead on level terms a minute before the break and Lewis Tozer put them ahead on the hour.

The game was put beyond Grays by Tyrus Gordon-Young, who netted twice on 80 and 85 minutes.

Monday’s result ended a mixed bag of an Easter for Andy Swallow’s Grays. His team had played the day before Good Friday and drawn 1-1 with Lowestoft Town. And on Easter Saturday Swallow’s men were in action again, this time away at Hendon where they came out on top in a five goal thriller.

The 3-2 scoreline delighted the travelling faithful who saw Chris Benjamin grab a dramatic victory. Benjamin was a key player in the match. He grabbed Grays’ opener after six minutes. Hendon took until the second half to get back when Dave Diedhiou put them level. But Joel Nouble seemed to have sealed the win for Grays with just seven minutes remaining.

However, Hendon hit back thanks to Michael Murrey’s 89th minute peanlty. But Benjamin saved the day.
