Rocks back at top of table

East Thurrock United moved back to the top of the table with the point gained in this Essex derby, but their Canvey-based visitors are still very much involved in the play-off race.

There were ugly scenes at the end of the game which led to Rangers’ goalscorer Anthony Cook being red-carded.

After an error-strewn opening half the match improved following the break. Rocks had a 75th-minute appeal for a penalty for handball turned down and the visitors took the lead when Cook lashed the ball into the net 60 seconds later.

Rocks lost midfielder Nicky Barnes, who they signed from Concord a few weeks ago, when he was dismissed for a challenge from behind on Rangers’ Jon Turnbull.

But despite being down to 10 men, the Rookery Hill outfit, watched by a 178 crowd, refused to give up the ghost and levelled three minutes from time.

A long throw from Kevin Newby was sent into the penalty area and ever-reliable top scorer Martin Touhy was on hand to squeeze it past Adam Rafis in the Concord goal.
