EAST Thurrock United clung onto their unbeaten start to the season as Sam Higgins’ late intervention ensured a point against Wealdstone.
The goal came against the run of play in a match Wealdstone dominated for long periods, but were unable to find the second goal.
That was until Lewis Smith took a quick free-kick with two minutes remaining, feeding the ball into Higgins at the near post.
He turned on a sixpence and hammered high inside the near post, with the aid of a deflection.
Both teams struggled to get a foothold in the opening exchanges of the National League South clash, with Wealdstone punishing Rocks with their first attempt of the match.
Matt Wichelow picked up the ball from 25 yards with his back to goal, before spinning and sending a fierce left-footed strike inside the far post.
It was proving to be a very quiet half, with neither creating a clear-cut chance, although Higgins headed narrowly off target.
The hosts excellent start to the season was put under increasing pressure, and took a deserved lead into half-time.
East Thurrock were coming under increasing pressure after the break, with Matt Day almost catching goalkeeper Lukas Lidakevicius unawares with a swerving strike from range.
George Allen and Lewis Smith had half-chances.
But it was Higgins that had a decisive say in proceedings, as he ensured a dramatic point.
East Thurrock United: Lidakevicius, Sammons, Harris, Allen, Ekpiteta, Burns, Agyemang (Honesty 85’), Cornhill, Higgins, Akinwande, Smith
