EAST Thurrock United captain Sam Higgins says he is expecting a typically tough afternoon when Wealdstone visit Essex tomorrow.

Rocks are unbeaten at the start of the season and sit third in the National League South after seven matches.

Wealdstone are in the relegation places, with their only win coming against Concord Rangers on the opening day of the season.

Gordon Bartlett ended his 22 year spell as manager of the Stones earlier this month, with former Hungerford manager Bobby Wilkinson taking charge.

Two draws in his first two matches have preceded a trip to Corringham, and Higgins is looking forward to the test.

“We are looking forward to the game,” said Higgins, 27.

“They have made a couple of changes and that often brings a change in performance.

“They are always a tough opponent and the fact we are above them does not mean we have the divine right to win this game.”

Higgins has already scored five league goals this season, a tally it took him until January to reach last term after suffering a number of troublesome injuries.

The goals of Lewis Smith and Montel Agyemang have also helped Rocks to the top of the league scoring charts.

And Higgins has praised the entire team for their early season efforts.

“We are really pleased with the start and we have surprised a few people,” he said.

“We lost some important players but some good signings have helped us a lot.

“It makes a big difference to have Lew here. He has been an important part of the team in the past and has fitted back in like he was never away. He helps me personally as defenders worry about him.

“Montel has come in and is on a good run of form as well.

“We have played some good teams already and have looked a much stronger unit. We are a more powerful side and can stand up to the more physical teams now.

“We have clean sheets to show for our efforts and I am pleased with what everyone is doing.”

THE PREVIEW: Although East Thurrock United manager John Coventry has built a strong squad this summer, few would have put them third in the standings after seven matches.

Rocks are currently unbeaten and will be favourites ahead of tomorrow’s match against Wealdstone.

Fancied by many at the start of the season, Wealdstone are currently in the relegation places with just one win from their opening seven matches - following the departure of Gordon Bartlett and appointment of Bobby Wilkinson from Hungerford.

However, the Stones have an excellent record against East Thurrock - and have not lost in their last nine meetings - stretching back to March 2008.

MEN TO WATCH: Lewis Smith continues to impress in wide positions for East Thurrock, while former Southend United striker Elliot Benyon will be a focal point for Wealdstone.

WHEN & WHERE: Tomorrow at 3pm. The FutureFuel Stadium, Rookery Hill, Corringham, SS17 9LB

WHAT THE BOSS SAID: “Players at this level are experienced and will adapt to a new manager,” said Coventry. “Gordon will be a massive loss for that club but, as is the case in football, things change. Bobby comes in and he is very ambitious and will want to do well.

“Wealdstone will be up there. They have a good squad and it doesn’t matter who we play as all these games are tough. We just want the next game to come along at the moment!”

TEAM NEWS: James White and Ben Marlow will return in the next two weeks, while Kye Ruel has left the club.

Wealdstone are likely to be missing midfielder Sam Cox.
