EAST Thurrock United’s man-of-the-moment Tom Wraight says Concord Rangers can expect to be in for a tougher game when they make the trip to Rookery Hill on Sunday.

The 22-year-old struck a wonderful last minute equaliser to earn a draw in the reverse fixture on Boxing Day.

But the man who was trialling at League One Gillingham in the summer admits Rocks were not on their game that day, and will be much improved the next time the two do battle.

“It was a good result for us in the end but probably a dire game to watch,” he said. “We got a point where we didn’t deserve it as we were far from our best.

“Afterwards we knew we hadn’t performed at the level required. We had been winning matches 5-1 and winning at places like Aldershot so to put in that performance wasn’t good enough.

“But it is about getting results and we got a point in the end.”

Wraight’s injury-time free-kick was his fourth from a set-piece this season, following an equally impressive strike against Aldershot Town in the FA Trophy earlier this month.

And, after Sam Higgins’ had hit the wall with his free-kick five minutes earlier he said he called dibs on the next.

“I took one in the first half but that was a bit further out and it went over,” said Wraight, who has 13 goals to his name so far this campaign. “The opponent thinks I’m going to take the same sort of free-kick each time so it is good to have that variety.

“Higgo bullied me off the earlier one but we have scored goals from rebounds in the past.

“I think the Aldershot one was the best one so far because of the nature of that game but I am just pleased that part of my game is improving. I don’t think I scored one free-kick last year.”

The talented winger failed to secure a contract at Gillingham in the summer, having also previously trialled with Ipswich Town.

But Wraight says he is remaining upbeat and focusing on his football as East Thurrock continue to impress in the National League South.

“I had a slow start this season and I wanted to put it right,” admitted Wraight. “It was a big step up from the Ryman Premier League but we have done well so far and want to keep it up as the weeks go on.

“I want to prove I can make it but I can only focus on what I am doing now and make sure I keep scoring goals and playing well.”
