SAM Higgins scored a terrific hat-trick to help East Thurrock to a thumping double over league leaders Leiston.

The Rocks striker scored three times in the second half to hand Rocks a much-needed win, after they were knocked out of the FA Cup on Saturday.

East Thurrock boss John Coventry was missing top scorer Lewis Smith for the encounter but his fellow forward stepped up to the plate.

Rocks were excellent from the onset, with Ryan Scott coming close to opening the scoring, only for Leon Ottley-Gooch to block on the goal line.

Higgins was denied by Ashlee Jones soon after, but the striker made no mistake after pouncing on a poor back pass from Ottley-Gooch to net just after half time.

A second mistake from Patrick Brothers allowed Higgins in for his second while smashing home his third with 15 minutes remaining, after Tom Wraight was tripped in the penalty area.
