Aveley beaten at Maldon

Maldon Town 1, Aveley 0
AVELEY’S impressive unbeaten club record run of 19 Ryman One North games came to a surprise end at Maldon where the home side produced a battling display, inspired by new keeper Charlie Hasler.

The players in front of him fought a rearguard action for much of the match but when they were beaten, the much traveled keeper used his experience to good effect.

Maldon’s gameplan was clearly not to let Millers settle and they threw themselves into their task with enthusiasm – and they almost got the perfect start when, after just three minutes, Ross Parmenter’s corner into a crowded six yard box ended with Aveley’s Joao Carlos clearing off the line.

Aveley then got into their stride and at the other end Matt Johnson picked out Petrit Elbi with a fine cross that was whipped off his head by the ever-alert Hasler. On nine minutes a low drive from Johnson whistled past the post.

With Millers building up a head of steam the crossbar came to Maldon’s rescue on 11 minutes when Elbi let fly from 22 yards after good work by Sam Holloway.

Having weathered the storm Maldon began to attack themselves and Jerome Ingram set up Nav Arrain, whose shot went just over the bar. Minutes later Sean Crockford shot across the face of James Marrable’s goal and then the keeper did well to tip a shot from Arrain wide of the post.

However, there was little the keeper could do on 33 minutes when Parmenter’s freekick got past a defensive wall and into the corner.

Aveley tried to respond in kind and John Maskell saw a powerful shot deflected wide and Hasler did well to keep out Carlos’s volley.

Maldon suffered a blow when Arrain was taken of with a suspected broken leg after falling awkwardly on the sticky pitch.

Millers boss Rod Stringer shuffled his team at the break, bringing on the more combative Nicky Wettner for Ryan Doyle and it certainly changed the balance of play, with the visitors dominating most of the second half.

Among the chances that went begging were a Carlos shot that was charged down, and a Maskell shot and Elbi drive – both saved by Hasler.

Sean Thomas was through in 69 minutes but his shot was blocked shot blocked the remaining 20 minutes saw Miller continually frustrated by some brave, whole-hearted defending.

Marrable was only call on once, on 78 minute when Ingram chased a through ball but the keeper saved.

Millers threw on Danny Jones for the closing stages in place of Glen Golby but they couldn’t find a way through.

Aveley: James Marrable, Ryan Doyle (Nicky Wettner 46), Sam Holloway, Garry Skerritt, John Maskell, Glen Golby (Danny Jones 75), Junior Dadson, Matt Johnson, Petrit Elbi, Sean Thomas, Joao Carlos. Subs not used: Christian Wheeler, Paul White, Chris Thomas.
