AVELEY'S hopes of making the Ryman North play-off places took a severe dent after suffering a 1-0 defeat at Norwich United.

Norwich attacker Christy Finch netted the only goal of the game inside the first minute of the second half.

The Millers controlled the game for large spells and limited Norwich to only a handful of chances.

But Terry Spillane's side failed to take advantage of the chances that came their way.

Aveley got the second half off to the worst possible start as Finch converted what ultimately turned out to be the winner less than 60 seconds after the restart.

And despite sustained pressure, the Millers could not find a way past Norwich goalkeeper Andy Milton.

The 1-0 defeat leaves Aveley tenth in the Ryman North standings, and they not sit nine points adrift of Cheshunt, who currently occupy the final play-off position.

Norwich, meanwhile, have climbed up to seventh in the table and are only three points off the top five.
