Aveley 1-1 Cray Wanderers

From Mill Field

Ryman One North

AVELEY missed out on the chance to briefly climb to the top of the league after they conceded late on to early table-toppers Cray Wanderers.

Petrit Elbi had continued his good scoring run with a goal on the half-hour mark but a late strike from Lea Dawson saw the Millers pegged back in torrential conditions at Mill Field.

It was the hosts that started the brighter and they could have taken the lead as early as the fourth minute as Elbi glided into the box, only to see his shot come back off the post.

But the next clear-cut chance did see the striker net, as an Abs Seymour cross was met by Elbi to hand Justin Gardner’s side the lead.

Andre McColin was denied by James Marrable in the home goal but the visitors did crank up the pressure after the break.

McColin came close again before Dawson hit a stunning leveller with eight minutes to go.

On the edge of the penalty area and with his back the goal, he took two touches on the volley before swivelling and firing into the corner.

And that was how it stayed, in what was a fair result.
