Aveley 0-2 Barkingside

From Mill Field

Ryman One North

AVELEY were surprisingly beaten by relegation-threatened Barkingside as their inconsistent end to the season continued.

The Millers went down 2-0 to the side third from bottom in the league but the game started slowly, with neither side able to get their foot on the ball.

In fact, the best chance of the opening 20 minutes was a speculative try from Aveley striker Jack Stevenson, but his long-range effort curved away from goal in the wind.

Both teams goalkeepers were spectators for the large part in the first 45 minutes, with James Marrable largely a spectator on his 100th appearance for the club.

But the deadlock was broken three minutes into the second-half.

Jason Fontaine scored with a fine chip in what was Side’s first effort on target in the game.

Calvin Poku shot wide for the visitors, while the same man headed straight at Marrable soon after.

Stevenson saw an effort pushed away by the visiting goalkeeper before a moment of controversy as Lamar Reynolds fell in the box under pressure. It looked a penalty but the referee was unmoved.

Marrable denied Poku once again but Barkingside were to get the reward their second-half display deserved when Lewis Francis was played in and he slotted home.

Aveley remain in 10th place after the defeat.
