Waltham Forest 2, Aveley 1
AVELEY’S scintillating run of form came to an abrupt end on Saturday afternoon as they were beaten 2-1 by Waltham Forest.
A brace by Corey Whitely secured the win for the Stags, ending an emotional week for them following the death of their former chairman Terry Back, who was killed in a motorbike crash.
After a minutes silence, the action got underway. Aveley boss Justing Gardner handed a debut to 16-year-old Harry Cannons, after Millers’ number one Ronnie Walster was ruled out through injury.
Whitely gave the hosts the lead in the 19th minute, striking through a crowd of players beyond the young keeper.
The Stags winger scored again midway through the second half to make it 2-0. His speculative effort from 25-yards caught Cannons by surprise. Prior to that, Cannons had played his part in keeping the score at 1-0.
Jay Leader grabbed a goal back for Aveley in the 79th minute, but Millers were unable to grab a late equaliser.
Last Monday, Aveley blew Sudbury away at Millfield, scoring three goals in the last 10 minutes to win 4-1.
