AVELEY produced two top performances within 48-hours to climb to third in Ryman Division One North.

Boss Justin Gardner moved to say that “teams are scared” of his Aveley side, after they hit eight goals in 120 minutes to blast their way up the division.

On Saturday, Jordan Cox bagged a brace as Junior Dadson and Billy Holland got one each as Millers brushed bottom-of-the-league Ware aside in a 4-1 win.

Just two days later, Gardner was forced to make one change, Paul Burnett in for Rashid Kamara, but the result was the same as resilience and pace sunk a woeful Sudbury at Millfield.

Paul Burnett opened the scoring in a fog-hit game, taking down a cross from the right in acres of space, before firing past Eddie Howe in the Sudbury goal.

The hosts were pegged back four minutes later when Leon Antoine scored with Sudbury’s only effort on target, heading home from a corner that Gardner was furious was given in the first place.

It took 66 minutes of football, a plethora of missed opportunities and a dogged determination which wore down the visitors before Aveley took the lead through Hungarian sub Petrit Elbi, who couldn’t miss with one of his first touches.

Two minutes later, a darting run into the box by another sub, Shane Oakley, doubled Aveley’s lead before Junior Appiah sped down the right wing and picked put Elbi with a well weighted pass, which Elbi buried following an exquisite first touch.

At the time of going to press, Aveley sat third in the league having won their fifth game on the spin.
