Runner outsprints on home turf

ATHLETICS: Adam Hickey won the Southend 10km for the third time in as many years yesterday, outsprinting Paul Whittaker to take the title.

It was the fifth time overall that Hickey, 24, has won his home town race but he was made to work hard by Whittaker, with the pair running shoulder to shoulder for the entire race.

The first woman home was Springfield Striders’ Nikki Brockbank, with Billericay Striders’ Emma Prideaux second and Southend AC’s Kerry Holland third.
