Southern Womens League battle for Thurrock Harriers

ATHLETICS: THE final Southern Women’s League Match at Thurrock was held on Saturday and with Thurrock needing to score 38 points more than Bexley to win the league, it was always going to be a big ask. With six teams set to turn up at Thurrock it showed the current situation with the changes in league competions with only Bexley fielding a team with Bournemouth sending just one athlete.

Thurrock’s committed few once again showed their fighting colours with athletes doing extra events to fill the gaps. But despite Thurrock winning the match with 180 points Bexley were hot on their tails with 172 points giving them the title and making Thurrock the runners-up.

The field events produced double victories in the high jump with both Natalie Le Beau and Lucy Howes clearing 1.55m, Natalie Le Beau and Amelia Sumum in the long jump, Natalie jumping over five metres again. Team boss Sue Lawrence won the shot with Lucy Howes winning the B string.

On the track Gemma Holloway won the 800m and 400m, Rebecca Barnard gained a hat-trick of wins in the 400m hurdles, 100m hurdles and 400m. Lynn Talbert ran in the 100m and 800m and gained extra hammer and discus points. Road Runners Toni Noble and Victoria Peacock hit the track for the first time and gained wins in the 3,000m and 1,500m. Sarah Driver won the B 3,000m.

Final Result: 1st Thurrock 180; 2nd Bexley 172; 3rd Bournemouth 12.
