Essex Make quarter finals

COUNTY CRICKET: Essex made it into the quarter-finals of the Twenty20 competition without striking a ball in anger.

The Eagles’ final match in the south division at Hampshire was rained off on Sunday, but they still progressed after Durham failed to beat Lancashire in the northern division.

It meant Essex finished outside the two automatic qualifying places, but went through as one of the best third-placed teams in the three divisions.
