Hayley McLean wins first senior medal

ATHLETICS: TEENAGER hurdles star Hayley McLean has won her first senior national medal.

The 17-year-old, from Stanford-le-Hope, picked up a silver medal at the English Championships in Birmingham.

Conditions in the Midlands were terrible, with rain and wind the main features of the two days of competition, meaning fast times were at a premium.

McLean won her heat in 59.90s, before running 59.32s in the next day’s final, where she finished runner-up to Emily Bonnett, seven years her senior.

The race also included the Southern Championships, meaning McLean was a silver-medallist in that category too.

Palmer’s College student McLean will now turn her attentions to the UK under-20 championships and World Junior Championships trials in Bedford next weekend.

She will be looking to run the qualifying time of 58.50s for the World Junior Championships, in Barcelona, during the meeting.
