Wingate and Finchley 1, East Thurrock United 1 John Coventry’s Rocks continue to stutter rather nervously towards the end-of-season play-offs.
On Saturday at a side still harbouring strong promotion aspirations themselves, the Rookery Hill side looked the better outfit for long periods.
But, as so often in the recent past, they failed to hold onto a deserved lead and eventually had to settle for a share of the spoils.
After missing some good chances, the visitors took a 58th-minute lead when Kris Newby latched onto a James Donovan through ball to score.
But they were pegged back when home substitute Tidjane Carvelo grabbed an equaliser and, despite Wingate having Jordan Fowler sent off for a late tackle in the closing stages, were unable to grab a winner.
Rocks fell a place to third with the dropping of two points and, although still well-placed for the end of season promotion finale, will be looking over their shoulder at challenging clubs such as Concord Rangers and Great Wakering.
East Thurrock face a difficult Essex derby at Brentwood tomorrow night.
