Blues misery continues as Edinburgh's men dominate

Grays 0, Rushden and Diamonds 3 ANY thought that their former boss Justin Edinburgh and a number of their former players in the visiting side might do Grays a favour were soon dispelled.

The seemingly unstoppable march towards relegation for Julian Dicks’s hosts continued as Rushden even allowed themselves the luxury of missing out on two penalties as they continued their push towards the play-offs.

For their part Grays, despite constant changes in personnel, were suffering their sixth straight defeat and, with 16 matches to go, are 12 points from safety.

Diamonds had trumped their rivals 5-4 in the corresponding match at Rushden earlier in the season.

But this latest affair in front of a 476-strong crowd had a slow start until ex-Grays man Aaron O’Connor put the visitors ahead from Lee Tomlin’s set-up six minutes before half-time.

Grays’ goalkeeper Richard Martin saved a 70th-minute spot-kick from defender Michael Corcoran following a foul on Tomlin by Jonathan Glowacki, but the same player made amends soon after by heading home the resultant corner.

And it was a case of deja vu 10 minutes from time when Jefferson Louis saw his penalty saved by Martin after the keeper had brought down Craig Farrell but was on hand to score from the rebound.

Grays will attempt to rescue a season that is quickly turning into disaster tomorrow when they visit Hayes and Yeading.

But even their keenest followers are starting to recognise that their chances of escaping the drop are on a par with those of the name of Chelsea and ex-England skipper John Terry escaping from the red-top newspapers’ front and back page headlines.
