Grays'were made to look lacklustre by Chester City who won 3-1 at the New Rec.

It was the third win in a row for bottom club Chester while Grays have just one win in 15 and must be starting to worry about their chances of survival if things do not improve dramatically.

Grays should have scored in the 15th minute when Fola Onibuje out-jumped keeper John Danby to head down into Jamie Slabber’s path - but Slabs blasted over.

Onibuje was a class part for Grays and he soon became frustrated with colleagues who simply couldn’t keep up with the international sprinter.

Michael Coulson and Nick Chadwick were a handful up front for Chester. In the 30th minute, Kevin Roberts sprinted into the box, pulled back for Coulson who curled it over keeper Preston Edwards.

Grays grabbed an equaliser two minutes later. Onibuje knocking in a far post header from close range.

The Blues looked like they were holding Chester until just before half time until keeper Preston Edwards spilled the ball on the edge of his box. The dangerous Coulson jumped in, passed square to Chadwick who had the simplest of jobs to tap the ball in.

The second half was something of an anti-climax as Grays failed to challenge Chester at all. They squandered possession, conceded corners and failed to give Onibuje any supply at all.

Chester now looked deadly on the counter with only a goal-line clearance in the 60th minute from skipper Anwar Uddin preventing then from going further ahead.

Onibuje brought out a fine finger-tip save from Danby. In 65th minute, Jamie Slabber pounced on a stray back pass but his shot went woefully wide.

Grays made several changes but none of the young subs could make any impression at all.

Chester wrapped up the game in the 75th minute when Chadwick again tapped in from three yards after good work down the left by the masterly Coulson.

After the game, Grays boss Julian Dicks was in unforgiving mood.

He said: “Since I have arrived, nine players have gone and judging on this performance, more could go.

“Once again people are not working hard enough for the game. The mistake by Preston was unfortunate but we did not go out there and try and win that game back in the second half.”
