Pegasus & Corringham 1st 171-5 Brookweald CC 1st 170-8 PEGASUS recorded another convincing home victory against Brookweald - but not without a few scares.
After winning the toss and inserting the visitors Brookweald made steady progress to 75-2, seeing off the P&C opening bowling combination of Laird and Hathaway and it was left to Turnball (2-30) and the economical Rhemutullah (1-18 off 9 overs) to get amongst the visiting batsmen, reducing them to 100-5.
With a stranglehold on the innings, the visitors then only managed 170 for 8 from 45 overs, with Bennett’s flight and prolific spin netting him 3-31 at the rear of the innings.
With what seemed a below par total the P&C batsmen went about the chase in confident mood.
But as in previous weeks had lost vital early wickets and at 60-4 the game looked in the balance.
It was left to a powerful knock by skipper Bennett (92) and a watchful Downey (39 not out) to steer the home side to victory for the loss of only five wickets.
What looked a comfortable chase on paper wasn’t in reality, as the variety of Brookweald bowlers tested the batsmen on a seaming pitch, but the quality of Bennett shone through to seal the home win inside 30 overs.
