TWO siblings from Grays are thriving on the track after securing gold medals in the England National Athletics Championships.

Daniel and Emily Knight were the pick of the sprinters at the Age Group competition in Sheffield, triumphing in the 60m hurdles.

Both students at William Edwards School, the pair have thrived since joining Enfield & Haringey Athletic Club.

And dad Steve believes Daniel, 16, and Emily, 14, can continue to thrive in the sport as they look ahead to the English Schools Championships.

“They have both come on so well,” said Steve. “They got into athletics between three and four years ago and they ran at Thurrock AC but because they don’t have indoor facilities Daniel and Emily couldn’t train in winter.

“They were doing well so we moved to Enfield & Haringey [who train at the Lee Valley Athletic Centre] and have excelled.

“Daniel won his first 60m indoor title two years ago and won it again this year. This was Emily’s first win and she got a personal best [9.09s] as well in the final.

“They spur each other on. Emily wants to be like her brother and she does some of the older age group training as well. The sibling rivalry is there but it is all good natured.”

The pair are both ranked as number one in the country for their age group. Daniel is now targeting success in the outdoor events, with the English Schools Championships coming up.

Steve added: “I am proud of what they are doing and I am so pleased for Emily, as well as Daniel of course.

“She has been in her brother’s shadow and she is really showing she has that talent to do great things.”
