Thurrock failed to extend the gap between themselves and the bottom of the Isthmian Premier League after losing the lead in a 2-1 defeat at Merstham.
Remi Sutton had given Mark Stimson’s team the lead on 30 minutes, hammering in off the inside of the far post with aplomb.
But that lead lasted only eight minutes in Surrey.
Charlie Penny finished well from close range after good wing play from Alex Addai, and the latter was to get the winner.
Ten minutes into the second half, the tricky winger cut inside and sent a fierce strike into the far corner of the net.
In the Isthmian North, Grays Athletic also failed to hold onto a lead in their late bid for a play-off place.
Hertford Town levelled to earn a 1-1 draw at Parkside.
Grays took the lead when Kieron Bishop fed Jamie Slabber and he finished from close range.
But a bolt from the blue from on-loan Billericay striker Charlie Cole levelled midway through the second period as the points were shared.
Meanwhile, Tilbury were put to the sword by Thomas Debenham and Mildenhall Town in a heavy 5-2 home defeat.
The striker scored four times at Chadfields, with the Dockers three goals down inside 22 minutes.
A Debenham brace and a strike from Gareth Simpson had Mildenhall in charge, before Siju Odelusi pulled a goal back.
Debenham wrapped up his hat-trick before the half hour to compound a miserable first half.
Adam Vyse reduced arrears but, perhaps fittingly, it was Debenham who had the last laugh.
Aveley’s match against Brentwood Town on Friday night was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
