EAST Thurrock United midfielder Ben Marlow says taking part in Jamie Vardy’s V9 Academy scheme was ‘a great experience’ as he looks to secure a move to the Football League.

The 21-year-old was a regular for Rocks in the National League South last year, scoring eight times in 42 appearances.

Marlow recently tried his luck at the football academy, based at Manchester City’s training ground, as he bids to follow in the footsteps of Leicester City’s Vardy.

The striker famously dropped down to non-league before completing a miraculous rise and won the Premier League in 2016.

And he said he enjoyed every minute of the week-long course, in which he received tutorials from former Premier League coaches.

“I saw it advertised in a newspaper and thought I would apply for it,” said Marlow.

“I got a call through a while later saying I had been picked, which was great. A total of 42 players was picked to go up to the Etihad Stadium and it was like a big showcase.

“We were split into three teams and my group was coached by (former manager and current technical director at Queens Park Rangers) Chris Ramsey and (head of coaching at QPR) Simon Ireland.

“It (the surface) is a carpet, it is unbelievable. The facilities were top class.

“We saw John Stones doing some work in the gym and Vardy was there too but most of the professionals were away with England or their international sides.

“The training was intense and we played games in front of scouts so I hope I caught someone’s eye.”

A total of 60 professional scouts watched the three friendly matches against external opposition on June 9.

The hopefuls had guest lectures from Norwich City sporting director Stuart Webber, sport psychologist Professor Jim McKenna and a masterclass with Manchester United Champions League winning assistant manager Rene Meulensteen.

Brandon Scott, a former team-mate of Marlow’s at East Thurrock, was also in attendance.

And the former West Ham United scholar, who is currently on holiday, said he feels the sessions went well.

“It was a really worthwhile experience,” he said.

“I got some positive feedback and am waiting to hear if anything comes of it.

“I am keeping my fingers crossed, but even if I don’t get signed it was a great experience.

“It is great for us,” he added. “I want this chance and we all want to get back up the leagues and play league football.

“It is hard as you slip through the net sometimes but this is a chance to put your face in the window.”

Although keen to secure a professional deal, Marlow is happy at Rookery Hill.

And he is excited at the club’s prospects after some shrewd summer signings, including James White, Max Cornhill, Brad Warner, George Allen and Lewis Smith.

“The squad looks good,” he said.

“Covo has made some brilliant signings.

“We have experienced guys and the starting team is very strong.

“We want to push for the play-offs.”
