A YOUNG football team has shown its remarkable progress in its first season of senior football - winning the Essex County Women’s Football League Cup final.

Corringham Cosmos Ladies only made the transition from girls football at the start of last season, but they showed they are more than a match for anyone the league has to offer.

The Division One side beat four Premier League outfits on the way to the league title, including a 5-2 win against Collier Row Tigers in the final at Runwell Sports’ Ground.

And Irv Lyon, coach of the team, said it was a great achievement.

“I’m very proud of them all,” he said. “They showed tremendous strength of character to overcome Premier League opposition once again.

“Having achieved promotion into the Premier League we are now eligible to enter the preliminary rounds of the FA Cup, which is great news for everybody involved at the club.”

Madison Hubbard netted a brace in the final, with Rachel Fleming, Becky Gallacher and Bebe Ray also on target.
