TOM Wraight has called on East Thurrock United to end their season with a bang against Wealdstone tomorrow.

Rocks secured their National League South safety weeks ago and can end their first ever season at the level on 58 points should they beat Wealdstone at Rookery Hill.

Victory could be enough to secure a top half finish, assuming other results go their way.

And 22-year-old Wraight, one of the performers of the season, has urged his team-mates to finish strongly in front of their own supporters.

“As a team it is has been a great season,” he said. “We were written off at the start and it is nice to prove people wrong. We deserve to compete at this level.

“We have beaten big teams in the league and cup competitions and got excellent results throughout the season.

“We are now at the end of the season and it is strange when people say there is nothing to play for as there is always something to fight for.

“You get out of matches what you put in and we intend to show that against Wealdstone.”

Wraight has been a shining light for Rocks this season. Top scorer with 21 goals so far, tomorrow’s match will be his 50th of a marathon season.

His thumping volley against St Albans City last Saturday was one of a number of important spectacular strikes.

And he admitted he has taken some stick from his team-mates for his lack of celebration.

“Personally I have been happy with how this year has gone,” he said. “It has been on and off at times but I can’t complain.

“A few players get on at me about the celebration,” he laughed. “It is mainly (former Rocks striker) Dave Bryant and Harry (Honesty) as they think I could celebrate more.

“But it is just not what I do.”

Wraight added he would still love to make it as a professional player, following unsuccessful trials at Ipswich Town and Gillingham. But he said he is not concerning himself with it at the moment.

“I would love to be a professional footballer, I cannot pretend otherwise,” he said. “I speak to Covo (boss John Coventry) about it but would never do anything behind his back.”
