THURROCK’s inconsistent form continued as they were surprisingly beaten 1-0 at home by Norwich United in the Ryman North.

Having beaten table-topping Brightlingsea Regent the previous weekend, Fleet were looking to consolidate their play-off position.

And they looked the most likely early on. Ronnie Winn diverted a Glenn Poole cross onto the post in the opening exchanges, with Charlie Stimson unable to find space to unload a shot when well placed.

After 30 minutes, Christy Finch struck the only goal of the game. A straight ball caught out the defence and Finch burst through to fire past Bobby Mason, who did get a hand onto the shot but couldn’t keep it out.

The second-half saw Thurrock lay siege to the away goal but they couldn’t get the breakthrough they so desperately required.

Winn was replaced by Jack Barham, who was making his home debut, and his header almost brought a leveller but it was saved.

Norwich almost added to their tally but one was enough.

Thurrock: Mason, R Winn (Barham 64’), Sutton, Halle, G Winn (Goode 28’), Dunn, Clark, Poole (Onyemah 70’), Stimson, Christou, Cowley
