BOTTOM of the league Grays Athletic secured a surprise 2-1 victory at Ryman Premier League leaders Bognor Regis Town.

Kieran Bishop fired Jamie Stuart’s side into a seventh minute lead and it looked as though the Blues were going to hold on.

But with just five minutes to go, the home side got back on level terms through James Fraser.

However, in the dying moments, Lheureux Menga scored the all-important winner to leave Grays five points off safety.

In the Ryman North, Thurrock missed out on the chance to close the gap on league leaders Maldon & Tiptree, as they lost 2-1 at Brentwood Town.

Brentwood took the lead after 15 minutes thanks to Harrison Georgiou, but David Cowley found a Fleet equaliser just after half time.

The struggling side regained their lead in the closing stages through Lamar Reynolds to improve their survival hopes and hinder Thurrock’s promotion chances.

Meanwhile, Aveley secured a 3-2 win over Waltham Abbey to leave them one point off the play-off places.

Billy Coyne’s third minute penalty was cancelled out by Rimmel Daniel just two minutes later.

Darelle Russell gave the visitors the lead, but Gaz Dauti and Michael Toner found the back of the net either side of half time to secure the three points.

Tilbury’s play-off hopes, meanwhile, took a hit as they could only draw 1-1 with ten-man Heybridge Swifts.

Lewis Francis’ 15th minute strike had put the Dockers in control, but with just under 20 minutes to play Reece Conway diverted the ball into the back of his own net.

Despite Heybridge being reduced to ten men two minutes later, as Guillem Ramon was shown a straight red card, Tilbury could not make their numerical advantage count.

In the National League South, promotion hopefuls Hungerford Town were too strong for John Coventry’s East Thurrock United and ran out 3-0 winners.
