JOHN Wayne Hibbert admits he doesn’t know what the future holds for him after he was comprehensively beaten in his bid for the WBC Silver super-lightweight title by Andrea Scarpa.

The fight at London's 02 Arena was called off at the end of the sixth round after the ring-side doctor ruled a deep cut over the Horndon-on-the-Hill boxer’s right eye was serious enough to end the bout.

Hibbert, 31, had been knocked down in the fifth round on Saturday, after a fierce right hand from the Italian but battled on, despite blood streaming down his face from a cut sustained in the second round.

And despite Hibbert’s never-give-up attitude, he was unable to match his opponent, falling to just his fourth career defeat.

“From the second round I couldn’t see,” said Hibbert. “From the second round I couldn’t see. It wasn’t blood but my vision was blurred and I was struggling but I don’t want to take anything away from Andrea Scarpa. It is a great title for him and I hope he goes onto bigger things.

“It has been a great journey to this point and I don’t know what I am going to do yet. I can’t keep going home like this.

“I will take a few weeks off and see what goes from there. If something big in the pipeline then who knows

“I love boxing and fighting. The team has been great and the support and sponsors have been very good and I appreciate all they have done.”

Hibbert had been hoping victory would set up a shot at a world title fight, but he will now return to the drawing board after the defeat.

And he says he was undone by Scarpa, who started the bout in busy fashion.

“Before we went into the ring I felt really good,” he said. “I had the best camp and there weren’t any chinks in my armour but it is one of those things

“He was heavy handed and there was a big fight lined up afterwards so I was devastated.

“I am sorry for the way it went but I lost this one and that is the way it is.”
