IT was a weekend to remember for Thurrock Harriers as their athletes stormed to success at the Essex Schools Championships in Chelmsford.

Held at Melbourne Park, the club’s athletes brought home a number of personal bests and medals, with many reaching the national standard ensuring they can wear the Essex vest.

In the intermediate girls’ category, Amber Pullinger took gold in the 1500m with a time of 4.40:51s, securing the Essex standard and Kendrea Nwaelene (representing Southend) took silver after her 200m race ensured her the Essex standard with a time of 25.60s.

For the intermediate boys, William Adeyeye earned gold in the 100m with 11.05s PB and was also chosen to represent Essex after reaching the required standard.

Junior Boys- Daniel Ogutuga won bronze and secured a PB in the junior boys 100m with a time of 11.78s and Theo Adesina took silver after his Essex standard time of 11.81s in the 80m hurdles.

Funminiyi Olajide jumped a fantastic PB in the junior girls’ long jump, with 5.55m, which was enough to gain gold and wear the Essex vest.

Hayley Instance won bronze in the 800m with a time of 2.23.83s and Alex Gordon (representing Castle Point and Rochford) brought home a PB and a bronze medal in the discus with a throw of 25.66m.

Other results: Inter Boys: Kayode Odumosu 100m hurdles 14.98s PB, Jack Exley 1500m 4.27:66s PB, Daniel Soyebo triple jump 12.47m. Intermediate Girls: Lucie Ball 800m 2.35:87, Jessica Whitbread triple jump 10.00m, Danielle Ball javelin 21.34m. Junior Boys: Harry Parker 800m PB 2.12:10s. Junior Girls: Sola Taiwo 75m hurdles PB 11.84s, Ruby Bridger 75m hurdles PB 11.85s, Abigail Pain javelin 25.48m.

A number of Harriers also took part in several endurance events, including the Horndon 10k which was held in conjunction with the Feast and Fayre.

There were more than 330 finishers in the well organised event, although many Harriers regulars were missing from the race as they had a role in the organisation.

However youngsters filled the gap with David Johnson finishing an excellent third, 16-year-old Oliver Mann finished eighth (37.34s PB), Joe Logan 15th (39.29s), Jason Syrett 22nd (40.55s) and Tim Martin 23rd (40.58s).

The race was won by Paul Whitaker ahead of Crispian Bloomfield.

On Sunday, Don Lawless tackled the gruelling 30k North Downs Run and was delighted with his second spot in the V50 section as this was one of the British Masters Championship series.
