Heybridge Swifts 3-2 Aveley
From Scraley Road
Essex Senior Cup quarter-final
IT was late heartbreak for Aveley as they conceded a last-gasp goal to go out of the Essex Senior Cup at Heybridge Swifts.
Justin Gardner’s Millers had made the semi-finals of the competition last year, only to lose to Billericay, and they were edged out in this encounter, although they played much of the game with 10 men after keeper James Marrable was sent off.
Heybridge took a 14th minute lead through Jack Fowler, as he headed in Lamar Reynolds’ free-kick.
But things took a turn for the worse when Marrable was dismissed for a foul on the onrushing Jack Barham, and was injured in the process.
Defender Helge Orome went between the posts, but he was beaten deep into first-half stoppage time when Barham buried a 15-yard volley.
Swifts saw red early in the second period, as Lee Townrow was sent off for an off-the-ball incident, and Aveley hit back as captain Liam Nash fired in from range to make it 2-1.
The scores were level 17 minutes from time, when Arian Retkoceri pounced to level the tie, but the drama was not over.
Three minutes into injury-time, Reynolds’ cross found Barham and he headed past a despairing Orome.
Aveley: Marrable, Orome, Conway, Stavrinou, Oseyemi, Harrison, Nash, Retkoceri, Rene, Fallah, Seymour
