Grays’ Katie Head launched the biggest hammer throw in the country for her age group to win the Essex Schools Championships.

Head, 15, won the intermediate girls competition at Chelmsford with a personal best of 61.50m.

The distance was a tantalising 50cms short of the qualification mark for the World Youth Championships.

Other Thurrock winners at the Essex Schools included Samuel Alajiki (Year 7 boys shot), Joe Harding (Year 7 boys long jump) and Amber Pullinger (junior girls 1,500m).

A number of Thurrock Harriers raced the latest Crown to Crown 5km.

Adam Dowman led them home in fifth (18m 17s) followed by Gary Cahill (19m 04), Jason Syrett (19m42), Tony Draper (20m18), John Russell (21m23), Roy Aspinall (31m24), Dylan Harrod (aged 11, 21m40), Paul Mitchell (22m0).

Accompanied by his PE teacher, from Treetops School, Nicholas Paris completed the course in 33minutes.
