Soham Town Rangers 0-2 Thurrock

THURROCK continued their play-off push with another win at the business end of the season.

Thurrock started brightly and saw an effort crash off the top of the crossbar from just outside the penalty area.

Soham countered and Rhys Madden got fingertips on an effort that looked as though it was creeping into the far post.

But it was the away team that struck first. Neat work from Charlie Stimson down the right channel saw him fire in a cross to Ross Wall who took a touch before going down.

The penalty was awarded and Aaron Waters finished comprehensively to the goalkeeper’s left.

It was 1-0 at the break, with Fleet surviving a nervous goalmouth scramble towards the end of the half.

But Fleet were good value for their lead and it could have been 2-0 soon after. Leslie Thompson ran down the right and his cross come shot was pushed out, and the onrushing Joe Christou could only shoot straight into the stopper’s arms.

Thompson was proving a tricky customer to handle and he provided the second goal, as he fed captain Lewwis Spence who held off a defender well to shoot low and hard into the corner.

Madden made a fine save from a header late on but it stayed 2-0, with Fleet ending the weekend in fifth, a point ahead of Dereham Town.
