DAVID Hughes says he is relishing being a key figure in East Thurrock United’s play-off chase.

The 22-year-old goalkeeper has been a regular for Rocks’ this season, and the team haven’t lost a league game since the end of September when he has been between the posts.

The run of only one defeat in 16 games, which Hughes missed through illness, has pushed John Coventry’s side into genuine play-off contenders.

And Tuesday night’s 4-0 win over Peacehaven & Telscombe lifted Rocks into fifth.

Hughes says he is enjoying being in his first promotion chase, as he wasn’t part of the Rocks team that finished in fifth two seasons ago.

“I was being relegated with Thurrock at the time,” he said. “But this is very exciting. It is so competitive at the top of the league but we thrive off playing in the big games. We are looking up the league and when you are on a good run as we are we are confident of beating anyone.

“We have still got to play a lot of the teams around us in the league as well so if we do well in those games we can do something special this year.

“We have been great away from home this year so now it is up to us to continue that fine form at Rookery Hill.”

Goals from Connor Witherspoon, David Bryant, and a brace from Sam Higgins handed Rocks their fourth win in five games against Peacehaven & Telscombe.

And Hughes, who lives in Laindon, said the close team spirit will be important in the run-in, starting with Leiston on Saturday.

“We are playing a lot of football but we are a fit team and are enjoying the challenge,” he said.

“We are a really tight squad. We all get on so well and are always laughing and joking and I am sure that helps.

“Having a settled starting line-up works in our favour too, although we have had some of our stronger players returning to the team as well in recent weeks.”

Hughes has his own personal ambitions, with international recognition top of the wish list.

And he said he was flattered to hear that England C goalkeeping coach Mick Payne has already been to watch him play this season.

“Personally it would be great to force my way into the England C set-up. That would be a real dream for me but I have a lot to improve if I want to get there.

“I always look to improve. Shot-stopping, kicking and other aspects of my game need to get better. I normally go over a game with my dad or my girlfriend. I have a lot of critics.

“But I wouldn’t change that.”
