Thamesmead Town 0-1 Aveley
From Bayliss Avenue
Ryman One North
KYLE Asante scored the only goal to hand Aveley the points against Thamesmead Town as they maintained their play-off push.
The Millers sit 5th after back-to-back wins over Christmas, and they should have taken the lead with the first opening of the afternoon.
Marcus Elliott beat the Mead keeper to the ball, and Steve Carvell look set to score after he was played in but the keeper recovered and saved well.
James Marrable was also being kept busy in the Millers goal, saving well from Tyrus Gordon-Young and LeslieThompson in the first half.
Ahmed Deen shot over before Junior Baker's header was well cleared.
The only goal of the game came shortly before the break. Theo Ola won the ball and moved it onto Asante who beat the offside trap and curled it neatly into the bottom corner.
Marrable was forced into another good save before the break, denying Rob Carter.
Mead' best player on the day was Gordon-Young and he was again denied by Marrable, before he saw a effort hit the back of the net, only to be denied by the linesman's flag.
Baker cleared off the line, before Gordon-Young's shot was blocked away.
Their best chance of the half fell to substitute George Benner but his free header, two yards out, was somehow headed wide of the target.
Jack Hopkins fired wide of the post while, in a rare Aveley attack Asante's shot was comfortably saved by Rob Budd.
The game ended on a sour note, when Gordon-Young aimed a punch at one of the Aveley players, and was sent off after the whistle went.
Aveley sit 5th after the result, one place above rivals Thurrock.
Aveley: Marrable, Bakare, Preston, Baker, Harrison, Deen, Ola, Carvell (Essuman), Elliott, Retkoceri (Holland), Asante
