GRAYS Athletic went down to a solitary David Knight strike at Wingate & Finchley in Jody Brown’s last game in charge.

Blues were beaten by Knight’s 18th strike of the season leaving them only six points clear of the drop zone.

The game began in slow fashion, with Joao Carlos striking the first chance wide of the post after good build-up play from Aaron Wickham.

Conor Gough was tested by Tommy Tejan-Sie and Knight, although the 21-year-old wasn’t stretched by the efforts. A fairly solid first half performance from the visitors was not matched after the break, with Ola Sogbanmu striking over.

The only goal came after 53 minutes when the impressive Tejan-Sie fed Knight and he finished well across the onrushing Gough. Ex-Southend United man James Stevens saw two free-kicks curled off target before Knight mixed a glorious chance to double his, and Wingate’s tally, shooting wide when one-on-one with Gough.

Blues' best period came in the game's closing stages, with a number of defensive blocks ensuring Wingate’s clean sheet was kept intact, and Brown’s last game ended in defeat.
