NON LEAGUE: LEWIS Smith is aiming to fire East Thurrock United on another FA Cup run, starting against one of his former sides tomorrow.

Rocks travel to AFC Hornchurch tomorrow, hoping to repeat their 1-0 opening day win this term, in which Smith scored the only goal.

And he said he would love to help East Thurrock to another cup run, reminiscent of their cup run three years ago, with saw them reach the first round proper, where they took on Macclesfield Town in front of a Rookery Hill crowd of more than 1,200.

Although the 24-year-old must overcome an ankle injury he sustained late on in Rocks 0-0 draw with Lewes on Tuesday night.

“I really hope I can play in the game. I got smashed on the ankle towards the end of the match on Tuesday so it is touch and go at the moment.

“It is a bit weird when I play Hornchurch but, when it comes down to it, each game is as important as the next. I just want to win.”

Smith is an integral part of John Coventry’s team, and is regarded as one of the most skilful and technical in the division. Appreciated by the fans for his work rate, he has previously played at Conference Premier level but says he is enjoying his football under John Coventry.

“I love it here,” he said. “I get on so well with the players and management and it is nice the fans are saying good things about my performances too.

“I would love to go on a bit of a cup run. I have always been knocked out really early so I don’t know what it would be like to make it through the rounds.”

And Smith says the romance of the FA Cup is still well and truly alive at non-league level.

“The cup is massive. Everyone wants to do well in the cup as all it takes is one moment to put you through or knock you out. The further you go the more excitement there is around the club and the players like that. It’s a good buzz.”

Record goal-scorer Sam Higgins recently rejoined the club and Smith said it was a huge boost for the team, and a bonus to play alongside a fellow goalscorer – although that is an aspect of his game he is looking to improve.

“Having Higgo back is massive for the club,” said Smith. “I have never played with anyone who scores goals like him. We have played together before so I know him well and I think that helps.

“It would be nice to score a few more goals. I don’t like to set myself targets, mainly as I never reach them, but I am doing my best to get in the right areas and score more goals.”
