SOUTH Essex Gym Club’s Brinn Bevan and Jay Thompson overcame a nervy finish to help Great Britain’s junior squad win team gold at the European Championships in Bulgaria yesterday.

The gold was Britain’s fourth in succession but it came after Thompson and team-mate Joe Fraser both fell off the pommel horse in the final round of competition.

But Britain’s nearest rivals — Russia — could not take advantage of the errors, as GB came out on top with 254.094 points.

Bevan, who is from Thundersley, will now be gunning for more medals having made the final in all apparatus.

Thompson, who trains in Basildon with Bevan and double Olympic bronze medalist Max Whitlock, also qualified for finals in the floor, vault and high bars.

Whitlock will be in action over the weekend in the men’s team and individual competitions.
