STANFORD-LE-HOPE’S hurdles star Hayley McLean is edging closer to her dream of representing England at this summer’s Commonwealth Games.

The 19-year-old won her second 400m hurdles race in a row in Florida last weekend, setting a new PB of 57.16s.

She is now tantalisingly close to the B-standard needed for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow which stands at 57.0s.

The reigning European Junior 400m hurdles champion is in her final week of a month-long training camp in Florida. A week earlier she had clocked 57.62s at a meeting in Gainesville.

Elsewhere, McLean’s GB team-mate from last year’s European Junior Championships, high hurdler Khai Riley-Laborde, got his summer season started at a UK Youth Development League meeting in Newham.

The 18-year-old from Purfleet clocked 11.08s to win the 100m for his club Enfield & Haringey.

Grays hammer thrower Tom Head was also in action winning his event with a throw of 59.35m.

Wiliam Edwards School pupil James Pearson (Enfield & Haringey) putted a PB in the under-17 men’s shot of 13.61m, while his school-mate Gemma Archer-Haley (Basildon AC) set an 800m PB of 2m 29.3s.

Representing her club Havering at the UK Development League match at Mile End was Aveley’s Modupe Shokunbi who did the 100m (12.7s) and 200m (25.5s) double in the under-20 women’s category.
