Aveley 0, Harlow Town 1

ALEX Read marked his Millfield return with a superb match-winning free kick.

The Ryman North top goalscorer, who spent much of last season with Aveley, scored the only goal in this woeful encounter.

His right footed, 25-yard free kick was hit with such precision that as the ball sailed into the top corner, Kalin Artkiev in the Aveley goal didn’t even move – he had no chance.

That was four minutes into the second half. The 48 minutes that proceeded saw both sides have a number of chances – all brought about by poor defending – but none were taken.

Leon Antoine had the best chance for Hawks but his effort from eight yards was well saved by Artkiev.

Minutes later, Kyle Asante did brilliantly to race clear of Joshua Urquhart, but he failed to control the ball. That led to Gardner miskicking a cone in frustration on the touchline.

Time after time he watched his side get into good positions but fail to create chances due to poor decision making.

Harlow weren’t much better. Read’s goal – his 44th of the season – was their only shot on target in a second half.

But three points for them leaves them well placed to secure a play-off place. Millers’ challenge for the top five ended long ago and as they are comfortably clear of the drop zone, their season is petering out with just seven games to play.
