Fleet crush play-off rivals Witham with "beautiful" performance to close in on promotion contenders
THURROCK thumped promotion rivals Witham Town with a "beautiful" performance, which cranks up the pressure on the teams above them in the Ryman Division One North.
Goals from Loui Hazelwood, David Knight and Lewwis Spence - all in the first half - secured the 3-0 win, as Fleet put in one of their finest displays of the season and stretched their unbeaten run to five games.
They now sit one place and one point below the play-off places and six points off second placed Soham Town Rangers, with six games in hand.
Mark Stimson's side have four games in hand on third placed Harlow Town and seven in hand over fourth placed Dereham Town.
And with the games coming thick and fast, Thurrock have the chance to thrust themselves in among the play off places when they travel to Needham Market on Thursday evening.
Hazelwood got the scoring started for Thurrock against Witham on Tuesday night, using pace and skill to pass Seb Murfet before firing the ball home in the 20th minute.
A little over 16 minutes later, goal machine Knight made it 2-0, whose driving shot beat Martyn Guest to nestle in the left hand corner of the goal.
On the stroke of half time, Spence planted a header into the Witham goal to have the game wrapped up before the break.
In the second half, Fleet should have made the score five or six.
Knight missed perhaps the best of numerous good chances when he was released one-on-one with Guest around 20 minutes into the second half, but he put the ball wide.
After the game, coach Tony Gay said: "What a beautiful game of football."
He added: "We were awesome. Best we've played all season."
