FOOTBALL: ENGLAND’S 1966 World Cup final hat-trick hero Sir Geoff Hurst, will be rubbing shoulders with players, parents and staff at a Wickford football club next month.
Sir Geoff picked Essex Royals for a visit on Saturday, March 8, as part of his work with fast food chain McDonald’s. Club chiefs are excited to have the former West Ham forward coming down to watch training, talk to players and sign autographs.
“It’s a really big thing for us and the world and his wife will be there,” said Essex Royals Charter and Standard Development officer Dawn Hutson.
“We got a phone call to say that he would like to come down to see us because he liked the way we do things. We have 20-odd teams that enable children to come through and Sir Geoff is very much into his grassroots football.”
Sir Geoff will be at Nevendon Park, in Nevendon Road, Wickford, between 10.30am and 12.30pm.
He scored three goals in England’s 4-2 World Cup final win over West Germany at Wembley, with Martin Peters netting the other goal.
