Aveley forced to settle for a point
1:04pm Thursday 17th October 2013 in Sport
NON LEAGUE: AVELEY were forced to settle for a point on Monday against 10-man Needham Market after the visitors fought back from a goal down to record a 1-1 draw at Mill Field.
After their shock defeat at home to Waltham Forest on Saturday, if you would had offered Justin Gardner a point beforehand, he probably would have taken it.
But after withstanding wave after wave of Needham pressure in the first half the Millers were handed a numerical advantage when Samuel Nunn saw red for a two-footed lunge on Petrit Elbi.
The referee had no hesitation in sending the centre half off. Kemal Izzet smashed the face of the crossbar moments after the sending off, but Aveley made their man advantage count in the 68th minute when substitute Daryl Atkins prodded home to give the home side the lead. Despite being a man light, Needham continued to look threatening and after the Suffolk side were awarded a disputed corner, the quickly taken set-piece was headed down by Ollie Fenn towards Sam Newson who nodded home from close range.
