Youngsters from the borough have skills set for distance events
12:36pm Thursday 17th October 2013 in Sport
ATHLETICS: THE cross country season starts this weekend with all sections of the Thurrock Harriers toeing the line at Braintree Discovery Centre.
Awaiting the runners is quite a tough course which includes steep climbs on a man-made hill. The Club has strong teams in the boys under 13 and under 15 sections. The individual challenge for medals will be led by Gemma Holloway in the under 17 girls and by Reece Scott in the under 13 boys. Thurrock’s veterans will feature strongly in the medals hunt. Scott Rice, Mick Bumstead, Eamonn Shelley and Jon Metcalf will be hoping to claim medals as they have done in recent seasons.
Reinforcements are needed for the Club in the under 17 mens and womens teams and, in particular, for the senior womens group where injuries have hit hard over the summer. Any lady over 18 who has had just a little running experience would be a welcome addition to the club’s ranks.
Runners are also welcome into the men’s squad. Here a time of 48 minutes for 10k would be the entry level. Anyone interested should telephone 01375673261 or turn up at the Thurrock Harriers’ track on Tuesday at 6pm or Thursday at 6.30 pm.
For athletics see the THURROCK GAZETTE every Friday.
