Success for Thurrock Ladies watched by England bosses
10:24am Wednesday 18th September 2013 in Sport
RUGBY: THURROCK’S T-Birds scored an emphatic victory over Richmond at the weekend Richmond – one of the top women’s clubs in the country – were made to look ordinary by the Thurrock outfit who were relegated from Womens Premiership last season. Against Richmond’s second string the T-birds were always on top.
Playing in front of England head coach Gary Street, Thurrock’s three national quality women showed why they are part of the National Squad.
They led the charge that allowed Thurrock to score five trys to none.
Thurrock started strongly and a turnover and then a clean scrum allowed Emily Scott to carve a line between Richmond’s 10 and 12 and score under the posts. She converted her own try.
T’s pinned Richmond back and borough skipper Mercedes Foy carried the ball well. And Scott, Burford and Harvey cut lines in the midfield.
But it was prop Charlie Micallef who picked up and rolled over the line to make the score 0-12.
Strong wind and driving rain made for tricky conditions and Richmond’s captain Laura Kapo nearly scored herself but was hauled down just before the line. T’s lost vice captain Nichols to the sin-bin and Ts defended desperately.
On the re-start Richmond got the favour of several penalties to push the score to 3-12 but Thurrock’s Scott again cut a hole through their defence. Kat Emerson scored next with Rachael Burford also popping up to put the ball over the line following a maul and drive. Scott then made the score 24-3 with 39 minutes left and the T-Birds supporters were screaming for a final try to secure the bonus point.
With last play called Scott found a gap and with the defence covering Burford, Harvey took the ball on the switch to go over almost unopposed. With the final score 3-31 T-birds bagged the five-try bonus to go top of Championship One South.
Thurrock: Stembridge, Francis, Emerson, Harvey, Burford, Scott, Cook, Nichols, Foy, Micallef, Ely, Jordan, Phelps, Beard, Jordan.
lT-Birds play next on Sunday October 22 with the first fixture at Oakfield. The match against Hove kicks off at 2.45pm.
