Strong Dagenhham side held by Pegasus
12:00pm Thursday 19th September 2013 in Sport
RUGBY: PEGASUS twos produced a resilient performance to kick off their Merit League season with a 19-19 draw against a strong Dagenham side.
In tough weather conditions you could have been forgiven for expecting a dogged affair, however both teams produced some excellent expansive rugby in a six try thriller.
In a topsy-turvy encounter, the home side took the initiative to lead 5-0 early on through Robert Broad.
But for all the host’s early pressure, they were unable to increase their advantage which proved costly as a big Dagenham pack surged forward and their strength eventually paid off as they took a 7-5 lead.
Recently Pegasus sides have found a resiliency which has made them such dangerous opposition. And once again Peg showed that here with a fluid display of attacking phased rugby. Working the ball out wide for winger Chris Wright, Pegasus regained their lead as he crashed over the line to give his side a 12-7 score-line going into the break.
The second half began with Dagenham intensifying their forward play, which consequently resulted in minor altercations and the major turning point in the game when Pegasus’ try scorer Broad was yellow carded.
Pegasus then struggled with their player handicap and not only lost their shape and discipline, but also the lead as the visitors scored 12 points in a disastrous 10 minute spell.
Staring at an opening day defeat, Pegasus made some tactical changes and the fresh legs in the pack put Dagenham under a pressure that had been nonexistent since before the break.
After a sustained period of attacking pressure, the away side defended heroically to hold on to their 19-12 lead but had to opt for uncontested scrums to take the sting out of Pegasus’ forward play.
Eventually the pressure took its toll and a well worked team try saw veteran Wayne Latte-Pope cross the line to draw the game.
This Pegasus hosts a league double header at Herd Lane with the second string kicking off at 1pm and the first XI starting their league campaign off to May & Baker at 3pm.
