Plate final at Cambridge is a boon for young Harriers on track and field

ATHLETICS: THURROCK Harriers’ hardworking young athletes were rewarded by achieving a place in the Eastern Young Athletes League Plate Final at Cambridge on Sunday. The U13 girls team won their age category outright, bringing home the first silverware for the youngsters in five years. The U13 boys managed second place in their age group and the other age groups were strongly represented – giving the club a respectable fifth place overall.
The U13 girls dominated their group with some great performances and lots of PBs. Kendrea Nwaelene and Shannon Coomes were untouchable in the sprints winning A and B string races in the 100 and 200m with both girls achieving PBs in the 100m and Shannon a personal best in the 200m. In the 70m Hurdles Jessica Whitbread won her B string race with a new PB and Jessica Smith ran a strong race in the A string to finish a respectable third place. Monet Jervier took first in the A string shot, with Shannon Coomes taking another 1st place in the B string. Monet also took top spot in the B string high jump with Kendrea Nwaelene taking second in the A string. Jessica Whitbread and Rhea Stavri earned valuable points with solid jumps in the long jump and both achieved fourth place. Abigail Pain racked up more points with a third and fourth place in discus and javelin. Olivia Mynett got a fifth place in the discus and also stepped in at the last minute to run the 800m, placing fourth in a new PB. Megan Smith threw a javelin to third and also stepped in to run the 1500m and got a PB in both events. Hayley Instance also ran the 800m and Halle Abbott-Trangmar the 1500m getting third and sixth place respectively.
The U13 boys had some strong performances with Tom Wakeling winning the B string 75m hurdles, high jump and discus. William Adeyeye dominated with impressive wins in the A string hurdles and the long jump. Liam Chivers and Rafiq Mackie covered the 100m and 200m with Rafiq getting PBs in both distances and Liam a PB in the 100m. Jack Exley and Harry Parker followed their recent relay silvers with second places in the 800m and Taylor Newell and Reece Scott covered the 1500m, placing second and fourth. Aaron Wong won his B string long jump and came second in high jump and Tom Wright came third in Javelin and Riley Tripp fourth with a massive new PB.
The U15 Girls team was represented by Grace Okunola, Seniz Jessener, Damilola Alabebe, Brittany Abbott-Trangmar, Libby Milne, Brooke Mensah, Elle Smith and Elena March. The girls worked very hard with most of them covering three events and the relay. Grace had an impressive win in the 75m hurdles and Brittany, Seniz and Damilola all achieved pb’s in their events.
The U15 Boys were represented by Yinka Sudipo, Samuel Ekumola, Charlie Splarn, Kanmi Peters, William Slaughter, Sam Smith, Nedum Okonyia, Dominic Lawson, Alex Dargon-Bloss and Max Hepher. There were second places for William in the 300m and Max in the Javelin and third places for Charlie in the high jump and Max in the discus (with a new PB).
The U17 Womens team comprised of Shannon Jameson, Lucy Jewell, Alice Martin, Kira Meredith, Gemma Holloway, Alyssa Sumun, Beth James and Maddie Cannell. Beth and Shannon both had second places in the A and B string Triple Jump, and despite injury Gemma Holloway managed to earn valuable points by coming second in the 1500m. Shannon and Lucy both got third place for the 100m and Shannon also placed third in the 80m hurdles. Alice picked up two third places in high jump and javelin with new PBs in both events. In the throws Lucy and Maddie both got third places in shot and discus respectively.
The club’s U17 men were represented by Joe Winn, Nweike Nwabude, Ritchie Osagie, Dalvin Kokogho, Gary Cahill, Aidan Simpson, and Joe Jackson. Joe and Nweike both did exceptionally well as they are both U15 athletes who stepped up to the older age group for the day. Newcomers Nweike, Ritchie, Dalvin and Joe Jackson all logging new PBs. Aidan Simpson won the B string high jump with Joe Winn coming second in the A string. Both boys also picked up third places in the long jump. Ritchie and Joe Jackson also picked up third spots in the shot, and Dalvin a third in the 800m.
Head coach Gerry Heapy said: “A very impressive day for everyone who attended. It was so nice to see good team spirit and friendship alongside great competition.”
